Hi all,

I have Word XP running on Win2k, and i can't work out how to only
x-reference the equation number in the text:

I insert the equation using Eqn. Editor, and successfully caption it as an
equation.  However, when i go to x-reference it in the text and select "only
label and number" it inserts the number and also the equation itself...

Is there a way to only insert the eqn. number, and not the equation itself
in the text?

Cheers for your time,

Manish.

If you have the caption and the equation in the same paragraph, this is
likely to happen. One workaround is to put the equation and caption in
separate cells of a two-column table. There is, however, a workaround for
all caption labels. For example, if you want to cross-reference "Figures 1
and 2" instead of "Figure 1 and Figure 2," here's what you do:

1. You must insert the cross-references first. This creates the bookmarks
that you will need to edit.

2. After inserting the cross-reference to "Figure 2," go to the Figure 2
caption and select just the number ("2").

3. Insert | Bookmark. Check the box for "Hidden bookmarks" and the radio
button for "Location."

4. The bookmark highlighted is the one currently enclosing "Figure 2." Click
on "Add," and the bookmark will be moved to enclose just the 2.

5. Repeat the process for Figure 1, then type "Figures" before the two
cross-references. The cross-reference numbers will update as figures are
added or deleted.
