I have a number of documents that use field codes for the numbering, like:
{AUTONUMLGL}

This causes paragraph numbers to always print with a trailing period '.',
like '4.4.'

The fix is to change the code to {AUTONUMLGL \e}, which removes the period
so it prints '4.4'

Is there a way to do this using search and replace or to make a macro?  We
are using Word2000 and so far the only option I have found is a manual copy
and paste.

duh.  Never mind. I figured it out as soon as I posted the message.

For those interested, from Tools->Options, select Field Codes.  That makes
the field codes show up as text.  From there a regular text S&R works.

How about:
First: Tools-->Option--> check the "Field Codes" item
Then:  Edit--> Replace .....
