Hi all,

I must be the dimmest person on the planet, but I just can't get the
outline numbering on Word 2002 to work properly. Even after following
Shauna's instructions on her website, it STILL won't do it! Can anyone
please help?

I need to write a load of reports for my Uni course, formatted in the:

1 Heading 1
1.1 Para
1.2 Para
2 Heading 2
2.1 Para

etc format and I want to create a template to make this easier. Simple
huh?? Yes, I think I must be!!
Any help gratefully received.

Hi Ann

I think there might be two different problems happening here.

First, I'm assuming that (a) you have no headings in your document other
than the level 1 numbering (ie the 1, 2, 3 paragraphs) and (b) you're
using a custom styled called Para for the second level numbering. If so,
then you need to follow the instructions at
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html but ...
instead of attaching style Heading 2 to the second level of the
numbering, you need to attach style Para.

Second, you should then use the following styles:
1 Heading 1
1.1 Para
1.2 Para
2 Heading 1 ****Not Heading 2!****
2.1 Para

See the very bottom of the page at
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/concepts/styles/index.html for a picture
that will give you an idea of how the styles should be applied to the
text. It's not exactly the same as what you're looking for, but it might
help.

Try that, and if you have further problems, post back.

Hope this helps.

If u haven't gotten it yet try this "in-depth" explanation:
Type 1st Header name
Highlight it
In the Style Box on Toolbar type literally "Heading,
choose it if already there.
Highlight it again, and on Toolbar click Format>>Bullet
and Numbering.
Choose a box with numbers, click Customize.
Under Customized Numbered List, under Number Format ensure
there is a "1" >> and Start At: is "1".>> OK
Whenever u type the second heading, highlight the first
Heading, click Format Painter, on toolbar, then put over
the second heading.

FOR PARAGRAPH:
Type a word, Highlight it, and on Toolbar click
Format>>Bullet and Numbering.
Choose a box with numbers, click Customize.
Type 1.1 in Number Format box >> OK

Everytime u hit ENTER after the last word in the paragraph
it will automatically number 1.2, 1.3 etc.
Or u can use the Format Painter brush on a paragraph and
copy it over the beginning of a paragraph too.

This will work,

This will (sort of) work right up to the point where you need to restart the
numbering. Using Shauna's method of setting up outline numbering will work
*all the time*, and numbering restarts will be handled automatically. Use of
the Format Painter is discouraged by proficient Word users.
