I work for a lawfirm and we have to number our paragraphs
1, 2, a, b, etc. When my attorney tries to update is
paragraph number by adding a style for it, it erases all
the other paragraph numbering. For instances, he had
paragraph 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. He wanted to make paragraph 3 a
and indent it. He went through all the project procedures
and when he hit okay, it put a in place of 3 but it erased
the paragraph numbers for 1, 2, 4 and so on.

This is the best explanation of setting up a numbering
scheme.  If you need several different types of schemes
in your firm on a regular basis, the firm might want to
look into buying MacPac Numbering software, which is what
a lot of law firms use.
