Permanently Change Format of Numbered List

I want to update my Normal.dot so that it contains the appropriate format
for a simple numbered list.

I have opened the Normal.dot and created a Numbered List and customized it
so that the Number is aligned at .5"
The Tab Space after is .5 and the Indent at is set for 0"

I then saved the Normal.dot and re-opened Word with the New Normal.
However, I must have missed something because when I start a new list - I
get Microsoft's default of .25 / .75 / .75

The method I use to start the new list is to type a number 1 and press a tab
and then type and press enter.

I have also tried clicking on the numbered list first and then type. When I
do that I get .5/ .5/ .5

Suggestions?

Modify the List Number style, save it to the template, and then apply that
style when you want numbering.

Dawn -

What you're doing wrong is trying to customize the 1,2,3 numbering
found on the Formatting toolbar next to bullets. It won't hold
because you're dealing with the Normal style; only by customizing an
actual numbering style can you have control over the indentation (or
anything else).

Solution: Open up Normal.dot again. Find one of the *built-in* List
Number styles under Format > Styles. Then, Modify > Format > Bullets
and Numbering > Customize. Make the changes again, try out "List
Number" (or whichever of the five List Number styles you modified),
then save and close out of Normal.dot.

Now, to create simple lists, use only the List Number style you
modified. The changes should hold. - Bruce

I am having a similar problem to Dawn.

I am trying to set up a template for an outline. The bullets/numberin
scheme I customized works perfectly fine, BUT it seems that I must typ
in the character (e.g. A, B, 1, 2, a, b, i, ii, etc.) for the outlin
numbering format and tabs to be "activated".

This template is going to be used by a bunch of people, some that ma
not know what an outline is supposed to look like. Is there ANY way t
format a piece of a document to a numbering scheme that is "activiated
only by using TAB??? For instance, on a <return>, if I tab once,
want "A." to pop up. If I tab twice, then I want "1." or "2." to po
up. Et cetera.

I realize that numbering in Word is less than perfect (heck it's les
than adequate), so am I asking for too much from it
