I'm assuming that you're referring to page numbers. The quick
answer is, modify your template to include page numbering.

If you are unfamiliar with the concept of templates, think of
each template as a starting point with predefined formats, such
as margins and paragraph styles, and predefined contents, such as
page numbers and possibly text. (Templates can contain other
items as well, such as custom toolbars and AutoText entries, but
we'll leave that for now.)

How can a template be created? If you have an existing document
with the formatting that you need, including page numbering, you
can simply delete its contents (apart from the page numbers, of
course!) and save as a template. If you don't start from a blank
document, format it the way you want it, and then save it as a
template. Note that when you select File > Save As, and specify
the file type to Template, Word will automatically select the
proper templates folder on your hard disk. Make sure the file has
a descriptive name! Then, each time you need its formatting,
simply use File>Open and select the desired template.

For more information about templates, you can use Word help.
There is also a lot of information at the http://mvps.org/word
web site, which unfortunately seems to be unavailable when I'm
typing this text.

Stefan's reply is good as far as it goes, whether by "side numbers" you mean
page numbers, line numbers, or list numbering. But you should *not* make
these changes in Normal.dot because it will have adverse affects in labels,
envelopes, and other documents. Instead, use a custom document template that
will include these features. See
