I am resurecting this post because it doesn't exactly help me with what
I need. I work in the biopharmaceutical regulatory publishing world.
With a new form of submission coming to the forefront of our industry,
we have to accommodate a static letter as part of our outline numbered
headings.
For instance, in Level 3, in some sections of our documents, there will
be a static letter S. (3.2.S, for example.) In some instances this
letter will be P, R, or A. So, my question is how to make the numbering
work to add a single, non-changing letter for levels 3 through 6 (or
even up to 9). It should look like:
3.2.S
3.2.S.1
3.2.S.1.1, etc.
3.3.S
3.3.S.1
3.3.S.2
3.3.S.2.1, etc.
I've tried this on my own, but when I apply the styles, levels one and
two don't automatically update themselves anymore; they're stuck at
3.2.S and will not advance as a new level 3 is applied after the first
one. I've managed to make levels 4-6 work just fine, and I can't tell
what I'm doing wrong. Is it the S that's causing the problem?
I've read Shauna's excellent instructions, but this is not covered. As
such, I hope to get others' insight into this situation. Is it even
possible?
I'm using Word 2002, but I'll need to do this for Word 2003, as well as
for Word X for the Mac.
Thanks,
Beck

You an insert static text in the number format box in Format | Bullets and

Right, I got that part. What's not working is the consecutive numbering
of subsequent level 3 headings in the document. Levels 4-6 renumber
appropriately and subsequently, but the level 2 part of the level 3-6
outline number doesn't change to the next number in the list. So if
there are four instances of level 3 in the document they all look like
3.2.S when they should be advancing in number: 3.2.S, 3.3.S, 3.4.S,
3.5.S, etc.

Modify the third level numbering so that it includes the actual
number of that level instead of simply the numbers from levels
one and two. If you want to limit the number of entries to three
(that is, two numbers and the letter S), you can delete the level
two number, for example, and insert the current level number
again.
It might be easier to start fresh with the level three numbering:
Delete everything in the "Number format" box for level three, and
then insert Level 1 numbering (by selecting it from "Previous
level number"), type a period, select a number format for the
current level (from the "Number style" box), type a period again,
and then type "S". Does that help?
