Numbering appendixes

KarenR - 19 Nov 2003 17:46 GMT I have a book with both chapters and appendixes. I followed instructions listed in KB Article 290953 to add page numbers to my appendixes, but these instructions don't seem to work. Instead of getting A-1, A-2, etc., I get A on the first page, B on the second page, etc. Page numbering on appendixes B and C start at 2-n! I have tried this at least five times with the same results. Can anyone help, please?

KarenR - 19 Nov 2003 22:36 GMT I have read this page over and over -- and also John McGhie's page -- but I find these instructions to be rather confusing. Can't someone provide instructions along the lines of
1. Do this 2. Do this 3. Then do this...
I have followed John's McGhie's instructions, but although the numbering in the appendixes does start with 1, the prefixes A, B, C, etc., are missing. And I have followed Shauna's instructions with no positive results
Do you have any other suggestions?
Bruce Brown - 20 Nov 2003 04:05 GMT Karen -
* First make sure you have a Next Page Section Break at the start of each appendix.
* In the footer of each appendix section, make sure 'Same as Previous'is off. That's found on the Header/Footer toolbar.
* Also make sure Different First Page is off -- usually you want numbering on the first page of each appendix. Click the book icon on the Header/Footer toolbar to go to Page SetUp for Different First Page.
* Delete whatever page number is in the footer now.
* On the Header/Footer toolbar, choose the third icon from the left -- the hand holding a number sign. That takes you to the Page Number Format dialog.
* Check 'Include chapter number'
* In the 'Chapter starts with' box, scroll down to the Heading style you're using for your appendix numbering and select it. By the way, you *must* be using one of the built-in Heading styles for this to work.
* In the 'Start at' box, make sure the number is 1. If necessary, change the number format in the 'Number format' box at the top of the box.
* If all else fails, simply type in A-, B-, C-, etc., in front of the page field.
Good luck. - Bruce

KarenR - 20 Nov 2003 18:36 GMT Bruce Thanks very much for your instructions, which were very helpful. I now have both the appendix headings and pagination working as they should be. However, I cannot get the TOC to pick up the Heading 7 that I assigned to the appendix headings. I followed directions listed in KB Article 290953 (Building a Customized Table of Contents), and assigning TOC Level 1 to the Heading 7 style, but the TOC still will not generate corectly. In fact, each time I go to the Table of Contents "Options" window, Heading 7 is blank, even though I keep putting the 1 in the TOC Level box. Can you help?
Suzanne S. Barnhill - 20 Nov 2003 22:58 GMT You should not need to go to the TOC dialog more than once. Every time you do, I think it is initialized. Why are you revisiting it?

Bruce Brown - 21 Nov 2003 02:51 GMT Karen, not sure this'll help but it worked for me so give it a try.
* Press Alt-F9 so the Table of Contents shrinks into the TOC field itself.
* Within the grey cell, carefully change the contents so it reads:
{ TOC \o "1-2" \h \z \t "Heading 7,1" }
* Select the field and press F9. Answer "Entire table" to the question.
* Press Alt-F9 again and cross your fingers.
If that fails, another way would probably be to generate a second Table of Contents under the first, separated by a blank line. In the Table of Contents dialog, set 'Show levels' to 1, then go into Options and remove all numbers from all styles except for the 1 which will follow Heading 7. That way you create a separate TOC for just Heading 7, and it looks as if it's part of the first TOC.
And if that fails, well, just type in each Appendix under the TOC you have now. Since they all start with p. 1, showing the page number is kind of unnecessarily superfluously redundant, right? Good luck again. - Bruce

I edited the TOC field exactly as you suggested and it worked like a charm! Many thanks for your help

KarenR - 19 Nov 2003 21:36 GMT I have also looked at instructions provided by Shauna Kelly and John McGhie, but I'm not understanding them.
