Hi there,
I hope someone out there can help me.  I find the
pagination of Word to be the most annoying, un-user
friendly and frustrating experience I have.  I'm an
editor and cannot paginate documents, leaving the title
and table of contents without page numbers, but still
paginating the text of the proposal, then I cannot seem
to NOT paginate the appendices.  I have worked through
the tutorial, used all the people I know who do this and
they say the same.  I have to make separate files of
different parts of the document in order to NOT paginate
a portion.  Grrrrr.  I have word 2003.  If finally
figured out how to do it on word 98 then updated and now
it won't work.

Thanks so much in advance for your advice, Karen

Hi Karen

The number one concept here is that pagination is controlled by
sections. You need three lots of pagination (front matter, main body,
appendixes). Therefore, you need (at least) three sections. To insert a
new section, Insert > Break > Next Page. If you now do View > Header and
Footer you will see that you have headers and footers for three
different sections. You can use the Show Next and Show Previous buttons
on the Header and Footer toolbar to cycle through them. You will need to
Click the Link to Previous button so that, at the dotted line around the
header or footer, Word does *not* say "Same as Previous" (because you
need different pagination for your three sections). You can then use the
buttons on the toolbar to insert and format your page numbers. In the
case of section 3 (the appendixes), delete the page number.

There's a really good view of page numbering at

There is specific information about setting up front matter pagination
at

And, if you need it, there is specific information about including the
"chapter" number in the page number at

Hope this helps.
