I am writing a college paper and wish to number the pages:

 a.  No number on cover page.
 b.  Abstract and Table of contents numbered i, ii,...
 c.  Rest of pages 1, 2, ...

I cannot seem to do this using Format or Tools.  Any suggestions.

Thanks, Jim M.

Hi Jim
In order to manipulate your document you will need to use
section break next page breaks between pages where you
want to change or leave out headers/footers.

Your first page is a cover which you do not want numbered.
Put a section break next page after your cover page
title, which automatically puts you on page 2. Let's say
you're on your table of contents page which you want
numbered "i".  On the pull down menu select view,
header/footer.  A header/footer toolbar appears.

1.Hit the "switch between header & footer" icon to put
you into the footer.
2.Hit the "format page number" icon and you can select a
type of page numbering under the "number format" pull
down.
3.On the same icon go to "page numbering" and click
on "start at" and a number/letter appropriate to your
number format selection will appear.
4.Hit OK
5.Hit the icon "same as previous" on the same
header/footer toolbar to turn it off.
6.Place your cursor in the foot where you want the page
number to be (ie centered)
7.Hit the "insert page number" icon and let Word inser
the number for you.
You will not need to use another section break next page
until you need to change the look of your page number.
Then it's the same thing all over again.  Make sure you
turn off "same as previous" which sort of erases the
board for you and lets you continue to make adjustments
without affect the footer that came before.
Hope this helps.
Ellen
