Figure captions in a master document

I had several files with Heading 3 defined as "Chapter 1" and caption
that read "Figure 1.1" When I converted these files to subdocuments
the captions changed to "Figure Chapter 1.1" Is there some way to le
it know that I just want the number from that style and not the wor
"chapter" in the caption

I figured it out. The captions seem to reference only the number from
Heading 1, but the whole title from Heading 2 - 9. When I imported the
files to the master document, it had a different numbered outline.
Redefining the style that was previously Heading 3 as Heading 1, and
changing the style of each title in my document fixed the problem.

"Master Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a "feature" that not
only doesn't work but also destroys documents. The consensus (with the
limited exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering advice on these
newsgroups is that using the Master Document feature is a sure way to
destroy your document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are
not even working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said
that there are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and
those that will be corrupt soon. See <URL:

Which really should read Steve Hudson and most of the folks who have
read his article on such at www.raycomm.com 's magazine :-)

It's a publishing gimmick, not an editing tool. Use it as such :-)
