Page numbering in Word

Usually, when I create multi-page documents for
distribution as class handouts, I use the format Page 1 of
4, Page 2 of 4 etc.  This used to work perfectly for me
using either the Insrt Autotext method - Page X of Y, or
using the page number and total pages icons from the
header/footer icon panel.

Now however, when I use either of these methods, I get
Page 1 of 1, Page 2 of 2 and the total number of pages
won't display!  I have got around this difficulty by using
Insert Field - numpages - to get the total nmber, but I
would prefer to use the standard methods.

Anybody have any ideas, please?

Thank you

This is an old problem that has resurfaced as a result of a recent update.
