Length of indents

For numbered and bulleted lists, is there a way to set the default
indentation to something smaller than what it is? I am making an outline
within a column and dont want to start a new line in the middle of the
column when the line above is nearly all the way to the left.

Use a bulleted/numbered *style* (such as List Number or List Bullet) and in
the Modify Style dialog, choose Format | Numbering and reduce the indents.
