never ending problems

No matter how many times I change it, I find that my headings always have
indentation after text (Paragraph/Indents and Spacing/Indentation After
Text).
I want the value always to be set to 0.
I have done so, gone into Tools/Templates and Add-Ins/Organizer and copied
them over to Normal.Dot.

I have followed Shauna Kelly's great instructions, to no avail.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Change the setting in the Format | Style | Modify: Format: Paragraph dialog,
and check the box for "Add to template."

I did this and it still does not stick.

Are we talking about Numbered headings here? If so, you must set the indent
from Numbering (working from top level style, as Shauna explains), not from
the Paragraph settings. The numbering indent will override the paragraph
indent - not necessarily immediately, but will reset on various events.

No, best I can figure, he's not talking about indents at all but Spacing
After

I am talking about numbered headings. I have faithfully follwed Shauna's
guidelines.
To change them, I must be in the document view, and click on Styles and
Formatting/Modify/select Automatically Update & Add to
Template/Paragraph/Indentation/After Text.
I set this to 0, and must do it for each heading (1-9).

I then go into the Organizer (Tools/Templates and Add-Ins/Organizer) and
copy from my opened document (which I just corrected (see above) and copy
the headings to normal.dot.

When I go into a new document, I do not see these corrected values.

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom

Try the following:

Don't check Automatically Update (that will change styles whenever you make
any direct formatting change).

Since you are checking 'Add to Template' in a document attached to
Normal.dot, it shouldn't be necessary to use the Organizer. Add to Template
writes the style definition back to the template. However, you might find
with numbered styles that this is where the problems lie - you may find it
best to open Normal.dot, make the changes there, and save.

If you do use the Organizer, then try copying all the styles together 3
times.

Margaret,
Why 3 times?
By the way, I did try to modify normal.dot. It helped with the indentation,
but also screwed up the entire headings.

I'm going to redo Shauna's guidelines, this time on normal.dot. Maybe that
will help.

Three times because when copying linked styles using the Organizer the
linking breaks down. Copying them three times works. Two times might, you
are welcome to give it a try.

The path you give, however, has nothing to do with numbering. Modify:
Format: Paragraph applies only to paragraph formatting, and the only setting
in the Format Paragraph dialog that contains the word "After" is the Spacing
After setting. If you're trying to set up numbering, then you need to be
going to Format: Numbering, but I don't see any "Indentation/After Text"
setting in that dialog, either.

I don't completely understand this comment, I am getting to this path while
modifying a style heading.

Okay, you're modifying a heading style. So you go to Format | Style and
click Modify. In the Modify Style dialog there is a Format button. If you
click that you get a menu that includes Paragraph and Numbering. Which one
are you choosing in order to get the dialog in which you are changing the
"Indentation/After Text" setting?

Space after is paragraph formatting (which is a part of paragraph style
setup). It doesn't show up in the numbering dialogs.

Thanks to all for your help.

True, I am changing Paragraph and not Numbering. I see now.
The reason I am doing this is that the right margin of my numbered headings
gets smaller as I go to higher numbered headings. I want them always to be
on the right-most margin. The only place I saw to fix that was under
Paragraph.

But perhaps there is a better way?

I believe the indent (distance from the margin and between the number and
the text) is governed by the numbering list template, not in the heading
style.
