I am writing a technical paper and want to make active
links to by References so that in the test when I include
[1] You can click this to bring you down to the first
reference marked also numbered [1].
I want to keep the numbering of references dynamic so that
when new references are added at any location in the
reference list the subsequent ones are renumbered and
their reference points in the text are updated.

Thus there are two issues:
1 Adding a link with in the document to another location
with the text of the link including only the number of the
reference eg [4]
2 Linking to these numbers while retaining their ability
to dynamically update when new references are added.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the list of references is in the order in which they appear in the text,
use endnotes and manually format the numbering. If the reference list is in
alphabetical order, just create an ordinary numbered list and use Insert |
Reference | Cross-reference to Numbered item to insert a cross-reference
that will update dynamically. In either case you'll probably have to add the
brackets manually (though they can be included as part of the number format
in a numbered list).
