I finally solved my problem. It took 2 days before my
techie son had me save the doc in Rich Text Format. It
erased all of my footers, and messed up the graphic
figures, and of course, needed reformatting on columns and
breaks, but that was a small price to pay...my page
numbers finally worked!
I saved the RTF back into Word, and rebuilt the
formatting. But I had a perfectly clean document again. I
finished it yesterday, without one MS Word glich. Hooray!
Wish I had simply started over in the beginning, instead
of wasting so much time.

You could have accomplished the same thing by deleting all the section
breaks and reinserting them.
