I am currently attempting to add page numbers to my
dissertation.  Because of institution guidelines, some
pages must have Roman Numerals and others must have
Arabic Numerals.  In addition, some pages numbers must
appear in the botton center and others must appear in the
upper right.  The article, "How to set up a document with
front matter numbered separately" helped me get through
many of the steps.  However, I keep encountering the same
problem.  In my section 2 (which is my chapter one), the
first page must show in the bottom center and the second
page (through the end of the chapter) in the upper
right.  When I followed the steps provided, both the
bottom center and the upper right numbering appeared.
When I tried to remove one or the other, it would
disappear from all pages that came before.  I am working
with Microsoft Office XP Professional.  How can I fix
this problem?

Thank you so much for your time!

Lisa,

Numbering is tricky.  Don't feel bad.

I think the first thing you need to do to this troublesome
chapter is use File>Page Setup>Layout and apply a
different first page to the chapter section.  Now you can
apply the number in the footer center.  Click on show next
footer and deselect "same as previous." Delete the page
number, click on toggle between header/footer and insert
your numbering in the header upper right.

"Same as previous" is handing for roughing in headers and
footers but it is usually the culprit when things start
disappearing in headers and footers when you start to fine
align.  Deselect it as your first step in fine tuning
headers and footers.
