I am new to Word 2003, coming from Word 2000. I have read
the rules about numbering and digging to China. Generally
able to work numbered paragraphs out.
Now I see List Styles as another option on the numbering
dialog. They look like Outline styles. What is the
difference? When would/should these be used?
I'm about to work on/update legal pleadings. I suspect
I'll be using the Familiar Styles on headings approach,
but what is this List Styles thing? Numbers need to look
like -
Count I
1 first stuff
2 second stuff
a) sub stuff
b) stuffy stuff
3 third stuff
Count II
4 deep stuff
5 murky stuff
Thanks for assistance

Yes I've read the noted items, and spent some time
studying/experimenting with the Seven laws, though it has
been some time. I've only just come to this place and I
will review the suggested newsgroup discussions.
The thing is, I notice this 4th choice on the number
dialog box that was not there is Word 2000 and so far
have not found any explanation on why it is there. Is it
a new goodie or a ringer?

Sharon -
If you need to index your headings, as in a Table of Contents, you're
out of luck with list styles. You have to do indexing manually.
If you need to format the headings that follow the numbers, you're out
of luck with list styles. You must format each paragraph's heading
directly.
If you need to change space before or space after numbered paragraphs,
you're out of luck with list styles. Instead of modifyng the Heading
style, you must assign the level to a style which already has the
space before/after you need.
List styles seem to have been designed for outlining E-Z stuff like
grocery lists, 7th grade reports and short letters. If you know
nothing about outlining and your requirements are modest, then list
styles are a great way to get the job done.
For legal documents . . . well, that's your call. - Bruce

The result looked the same in the sample box making me
wonder why they added this tab. I think I'll just take
the "List Styles" tab off my list.
Thanks
