Word 2000

When trying to format page numbers in Word 2000, using
page (X) of (Y), only number (x) changes to special
characters i.e.Roman Numerals. Any help or is this just a
bug with the program and if so are there and updates that
can fix it.

Use Alt + F9 to toggle on the field codes and insert a \* roman formatting
switch inside the closing }

{ NUMPAGES \* roman }

Then toggle off the field codes with Alt+F9 again.
