Hi,
How do I quickly achieve the following numbering:

1.    Text here........
   1.1    More text here.............
   1.2    Yet more details
2.    Text............
   2.1    Text...........
   2.2    Text........
3. and so on.............

I am a newbie at this formatting/numbering stuff and would greatly
appreciate the help.
Tx,
S

There is _not_ a simple way. Avoid use of the numbering button on the
toolbar. The problem is that documents that have numbering like this tend to
be heavily edited, often by different people on different machines.

For a good start, see: How to create numbered headings or outline numbering

See http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. Follow
the instructions carefully and explicitly, even if you don't understand the
reason for them, and you'll have no trouble.

Oh well....that is comforting.....! :)
I can't believe there is no simple way and also that I should not use the
Numbering button on the toolbar, which of course I have been doing....
(hence the trouble I suppose!).
I will check out the instructions you have mentioned.
Tx to both for the advice!

Even if you follow all those instructions, you have to be very carefu
later on if you change your numbered styles (perhaps to amend th
numbering formats etc for different needs you didn't think o
originally). You may not notice any problems when you test it ou
(briefly) before using it on wide scale, but corruption could creep i
and manifest itself in painful ways down the track.

Then you will either have to live with it (e.g. numbering cancellin
each other out (permanently and undoable) when you paste, numberin
flickering between numbers, zeros, ones, or nothing seemingly randoml
when scrolling around, styles not being able to be copied from on
document to the other without it losing all the numbering information
which are some of things I've experienced over the last few years)

or

make up a completely new set of styles (carefully) but then you wil
have to either manually fix up your existing documents (without usin
the actual documents because the styling is still corrupted - may nee
to copy and paste unformatted to a completely new document) or leav
them as lost cases and use the new styles from now on

Hi,
That is unbelievable.  I mean this sounds like a major glitch.  And here I
was thinking all this time that Word was the best word processor available!
I am not sure I have the time to create brand new styles.

What are the pitfalls to avoid then if I follow the instructions in the
referenced web sites?

Follow the instructions on Shauna Kelly's site. For most purposes that
numbering will be unbreakable. If you are doing heavy-duty templates, then
go to the extent of setting up the styles and numbering by macros as
described in the other references.

I doubt the other poster followed those instructions. This is not just a
matter of using numbering styles but of setting up those styles following
the specific steps given.
