Page numbering goes berserk

Hello:  I'm currently running Word 2002, but have had
this problem also in Word 97 on a different computer.
Both computers were running their respective versions of
Office.

Occasionally when working on a document that is multiple
pages, in Page view (Word 97) or Print Layout view (Word
2002)the automatic page numbering feature goes nuts,
adding pages at the rate of thousands per minute.  It
keeps going until you dump the document (Word 97) or push
Escape (Word 2002).  The tendancy to do this stays with
that document forever after, no matter how many times you
close and re-open it.

Word 2002 sometimes returns a dialog box after you push
Escape, saying that Word needs to change to Normal view
to continue.

What causes this problem? How can I rescue my document?
How can I fix it?  Thanks - Bill

After playing with the document, it appears that the
problem is somehow associated with a .tif file that I had
inserted in the document.  I deleted the .tif file and
the craziness stopped.  That still doesn't solve my
problem - I need the .tif file in the document.  Any
ideas?  Thanks - Bill

Was the .tif inline or wrapped? How big? If it was full page size and you
had it wrapped Square or Tight, there would be no room on the page for the
text paragraph it was anchored to, and this could cause the same sort of
chasing.

Suzanne - It was wrapped, and covered half a page.  It
was on the page following the text paragraph, perhaps
that's what set it off.  Is there a fix, or is this just
a Word foible we have to live with?  Bill

The fix would be to change something in the layout; this gets into the "Move
with text" and "Lock anchor" settings, which I'm never quite clear on, but
what it amounts to is that if the graphic won't fit on the page with the
paragraph it's anchored to, it should be allowed to move along to another
paragraph. The way the position is defined would make a difference, too. If
the position is Relative to Paragraph, then Word doesn't have much
flexibility, but if it's Relative to Page (at the top or bottom, say), then
Word can move it to the next page, where there is room and move the anchor
to another paragraph, or move it to the top of the page it's on, allowing
the paragraph it was originally anchored to to move to the next page. Or
something.

I realize this is pretty vague (I don't work much with wrapped graphics),
but perhaps it will give you a start in the right direction.
