I would like to have page numbers in all my documents . I opene
normal.dot added page numbers, saved normal.dot and....nothing.
Next time I opened Word new documents have no page numbers and I hav
to add them each time.
How can page numbers be added automatically?
Thank

Let me suggest an alternative. You really shouldn't add numbering to
normal.dot. It is used as a building block for other purposes and your
added numbering would get in the way (e.g., a page of labels).
Create a new template and base you new documents on that template. This is
easy to do. For a detailed tutorial see:

Hi Aswi:
OK, I (and you...) should hear Greg's suggestion there: Normal.dot is
perhaps not the place to save many special bits of text because they can
become irritating to get them in every new document you create. However,
like you, I would probably save page numbers to Normal myself, just out of
sheer laziness :-)
So here's how to do it:
1) Find out which Normal.dot you are using. The easiest way to do this is
to look in Tools>Options>File Locations for the entry "User Templates".
Click the Change button and the next screen will show you exactly where the
Normal template in use is. Make a note of the full path and folder (write
it down). Be careful not to make a change, and cancel your way out.
2) Close ALL other documents. This is essential: if you do not do this,
the open documents hold an edit lock on Normal template and your change will
be undone when you exit Word. That's probably what happened to you.
3) Now use File>Open to open the Normal template from the location you
noted in step 1.
4) Go into the Footer and add your page number as normal. (You can simply
click "Insert>Page Number" without going into the footer: we strongly
recommend against this: it creates the page number as a floating item that
gets into trouble wandering around the page.
5) OK your way out and SAVE.
6) Quit Word and re-start it. This makes quite sure that the Normal
Template DID save, including any shadow copies that may be in memory.
This time, it will work :-)
Cheers
