Even though I select inches as my chosen measurement, my ruler bar divides
into about 42 something, my Paragraph box measures things in px, and my
tabs are in ch.

For a start, what are px? And how can I control these unruly measurements?

thanks,

see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=299339 "You cannot change
ruler measurement unit from character units after upgrade to
Office XP" or http://www.gmayor.com/Character_Units.htm .

That did the trick. Thanks a lot. (Now I realize px is pixels, but it never
occurred to me that Word would be measuring in pixels.)
