I need to produce several pages within a mainly portrait document, which
contain charts (imported from Excel) and a piece of text below, both of which
should print in landscape. In fact, the only text which appears on the page
in portrait mode are the page's header and footer.  My current solution is to
print out the blank portrait page (with headers and footers) and then
overprint the chart and text from a separate doument. Can I do this in one
print run?

You can do it in one print run using the instructions at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/LandscapeSection.htm, but if you're
just printing the document and don't need to provide it electronically, the
way you're doing it is much the easiest.
