Click the toolbar button that has the same ¶ symbol on it. :-) Turn it off,
turn it on, turn it off... Hey, stop! The keyboard shortcut Alt+* (that is,
Alt+Shift+8 on most keyboards) does the same. Both of them change the "All"
option in the Tools > Options > View dialog. If any of the other options in
that group are checked, you'll generally want to turn them off.
Also read http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm to find
out why you may want to see those characters, some or all of the time.
