Auto Numbers Without Tabs

Is there a way to use automatic numbering and not have the tab placed
after the number?  The tab causes uneven spacing after the number when
using Roman numerals, and I would like to just put my own spacing in.
Or is there another way around this?

If you use outline numbering instead of a simple list, you can get a choice
of Tab, Space, or Nothing following the number. But I generally right-align
roman numerals, anyway.

The right alignment works.  Thanks so much.
