Adding tabs

How do I get my document from changing format when I add tabs? I'm using the
newest version of Word. When I go to Paragraph, Tabs, and try to set a manual
tab or change a tab or make any change whatsoever in that dialog box...it
completely resets my document. Is this something I just have to live
with...meaning that I can never set tabs. I hate having to use spaces to get
things lined up right. I hate it, hate it, hate it! I'm a perfectionist &
this is driving me crazy!! Thank you for any help anyone can provide. I would
be most grateful for a solution to this frustrating problem.

It's a known bug in the first release of Word 2007
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927757). According to
http://download.microsoft.com/download/B/C/F/BCFBEC81-ED9E-40A3-BBF0-1410B67A365
A/Office%202007%20Service%20Pack%201%20Changes_all.xls

there is a fix for it in Service Pack 1, which means that the hotfix package
mentioned in the first article won't be available any more.

In the meantime, you can work around it by going directly to the Tabs dialog,
either by double-clicking in the ruler or by using the old keyboard shortcut of
Alt+O,T. The problem occurs only when you go through the Paragraphs dialog.
