I have a paragraph which has been ended by being spread out to fill the
border of the page, rather than finishing with the correct space between each
words.
Could someone tell me how to remove the extra large gaps?

The paragraph probably ends with a Manual Line Break (Shft+Return) instead of
a Paragraph Mark.
Use Ctrl+Shft+8 or the ¶ icon to toggle and if you have a Left arrow instead
of the Pilcrow, there's the culprit.

For more information see:

Hope this helps

Thank you very much. I used ctrl shft and 8; I then pressed return in this
and it worked, without this option selected the line was spread out again.

If you do want the Manual Line Break but not the expansion, Tools, Options,
Compatibility, check the "Don't expand character spaces on the line ending
Shift-Return"

Or, if you do want lines ending in a line break to be expanded in most
instances but not in a specific one, you can insert a tab character before
the line break.
