paragraph and dot problems

When i open a microsoft document or a new one, a paragraph
marker appears with the two lines and a p. Also, a dot
appears within every word like this dot.dot except the dot
is centered. I dont know how to correct this problem but i
know i want to get rid of it.

These are non-printing characters.  You can toggle them off with
CTRL+SHIFT+*
