Is there an alternative way of positioning a text in
header at an exact distance from the page borders without
using tables or frames?
Thank you for your help,
Rob

Thank you Suzanne and Graham for indicating those
possibilities.
I have to insert dates and other info in precise locations
on pre printed paper.
The difficulty is not so much positioning the text from
the left but finding the exact distance from the top of
the page.  Does one just make attempts with space before
and header margin and print till the exact placement is
discovered?

If the text is to be in the same position on all pages, then change the
header margin. Otherwise, add the extra space to the paragraph as Space
Before. Although this measurement is displayed in the Format Paragraph
dialog in points, you can type it in in any other unit of measurement
provided you specify it (using ", in, cm, etc.). For example, suppose your
header margin is the default 0.5", but you want the First Page Header to
start at 1.5". Type 1" into the Space Before box. Word will convert it to 72
points.
