From the file menu, page setup, Word highlights the
landscape layout setting as the defualt. When you change
to portrait, a message box appears which states;"
increasing the right margin causes the last column to
become too narrow in some sections having unevenly spaced
columns." If I choose portrait layout, with margins of
1.25" for left margin, and 1.00" right margin, and try to
save as the defualt, Word will not accept this and
defaults to the landscape setting only. This only occurs
in Word, all other programs print in portrait, the
printer test page prints in portrait. The printer
settings are set for portrait and will print properly.

Try starting Word with the /a switch to see if this solves the problem. If
so, then most likely you will need to rename Normal.dot (ordinarily you
would use the Default... button in Page Setup to make this change in
Normal.dot, but if you're getting an error message, this may not be
