I'm trying to format a document so that there is a main body of text o
each page, with notes in a second narrow column - but on the left of
left-handed page and on the right of a right-handed page.

For the life of me I can't figure out how to achieve this, if indeed i
is possible. I've tried page layout, columns and tables, but all to n
avail so far.

Any assistance greatly appreciated

If you just need small bits of text, you can use a frame set to "Outside
Relative to Page." The advantage of a frame is that it can be part of a
paragraph style so that inserting a frame in the margin is as simple as
applying a style to a paragraph.
