I tried unchecking Microsoft Office in msconfig to keep
it from loading at startup, but when I reboot the check
mark is placed automatically.

My system resources are at 66%. I need to increase it.
I'm trying to keep unnecessary programs from loading.

What version of Office is this? Have you tried removing it manually from the
Start Up Folder in the Start menu  Programs?
