MS Office Forum / Word / Page Layout / February 2004Styles - How can I create a template with just my styles in it
I created a new word document and within it attempted to create my own set of 'user defined styles'. e.g. A bullet list, a heading 1, heading 2, ......etc. I saved it as a .do I want to ensure that when I open that .dot document only my user defined styles show and not all the global styles. I have tried to delete the global styles but that option is not available. I am frustrated at seeing a mega list of styles in the dropdown list when all I want are the ones I created (perhaps 5 or 6 only) I'm prepared to start afresh with a blank word document. Can someone explain the steps I go through to ensure the styles that I create into my document - when saved as a template - are all I see whenever that template is called up, just my User defined styles - thats all Thanks You can change the view of the styles to show only those in use. The method and degree of control you have over style visibility was completely changed in Word 2002, so post back your Word version and where you are stuck if you can't work it out from the dialogs/Help. Can someone explain the steps I go through to ensure the styles that I create into my document - when saved as a template - are all I see whenever that template is called up, just my User defined styles - thats all? > Thanks I am using Word 2000 (9.0.4422 SR-1 I think I understand 'User Defined' styles but when I select the 'Format' 'Style' option from the toolbar and under List, I select User Defined Styles, it does indeed just show me the styles I have created which is fine However, when I close the window and return to my main document, if I look in the Style dropdown list of the Formatting toolbar, it doesn't just show the styles I created but a whole lot more When I go to the main toolbar, Format, Style, Organiser, and try to delete any of the styles I don't want, I get a message e.g. 'Do you wish to delete the style Heading 1' and I say YES. It then returns a message 'The built in style Heading 1 cannot be deleted' How am I ever to get a list of just the styles I want to use in my document? You can create a custom toolbar with a custom menu that lists only the styles you want. The Styles list always lists the "Styles in use." You can remove all styles from that list *except* Normal, Default Paragraph Font, and Headings 1-3, plus any other heading levels you have ever used. In Word 2002 and above, you have much more precise control over what the list displays. -- Suzanne S.
