I'm trying to set up my table of contents so it looks like
table 1.1 ...................5
  Summary of this and that
Table 1.2 ...................6
  Summary of these and those
etc..

But so far all I can get is something like
Table 1.1 Summary of this and that ..5
Table 1.2 Summary of these and
those .............................................6

What do I need to do to get the first layout?

The best you're likely to be able to get is

Table 1.1
   Summary of this and that......................5

unless you unlink the TOC and tweak it manually.

OK - that might work.
How do I go about that?

Right now I'm using TOC1 style for the TOC,
and Header 1 in the body of the document for the titles of the tables.
I've tried to create & assign Header 2 style, but when I highlight the
second part of the title and try to assign it, it gets ignored and left as
Header 1 style.  Is the problem I'm using a Header style instead of
a Title style?

Thanks for your help & time...

Although you can apply a heading style to part of a paragraph in Word 2002
and above (in order to include just the heading part in the TOC), I don't
think this feature was intended to permit you to apply two different heading
styles and get two TOC listings. To get what you originally asked for, you'd
have to have two separate paragraphs (with hidden paragraph mark if you
wanted to combine them), Heading 1 for the Table 1.2 part and Heading 2 for
the rest, and omit numbering on the TOC 2 style.

To get the effect I cited, you'd have to substitute a line break for a tab
in the TOC 1 style. I doubt that this can be done in a way that won't be
lost in updating, so you'd probably ultimately have to unlink that TOC, too.
