After inserting a jpeg or other bitmap, and then
formating the picture as "square" layout so text will
wrap around it, I then add a caption, which is inserted
as a text box. When I try and create a table of figures,
it will not recognize any of the captions in the text
boxex. If I don't format the picture for wrapping text
around, the caption is not inserted in a text box and the
table of figures finds it just fine. Any solutions? Thanks

Your subject line says it all. If you must wrap text around a figure, put
figure and caption together in a frame instead of a text box. Word can see
captions in frames.
