How do you create a dotted line that won't change when you
print it- is it possible to format it so that I can align
words to the left and numbers on the right- it's for a
table of contents, but I'm trying to just create this one
page- no need to link the page numbers to anything.

Use a right tab with a period leader (Format | Tabs).

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/SettingTabs.htm. In the Format |
Tabs dialog, there is a choice of leader characters, including the period
(dot). Set a right tab using any of the methods detailed in the article and
assign it a period leader.
