When I insert a file name in my footer (Word 2003) from the footer toolbar it works fine, but if I change the file name it does not update in the document footer, even if I close and reopen the file. What tool can I use to get the filename as inserted in the document to automatically update?

FILENAME fields do not automatically update in Word 2002 and above. This is
by design (see "The FILENAME field does not automatically update when you
open a
document in Word 2002 or Word 2003" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=832897). You have to update them
explicitly using F9 (but they will be updated at print time and therefore
probably also by switching to Print Preview).

You can update the file name field manually. Simply select
it and then press F9.
