Placement of text in the margin

I have a document where paragraphs are left aligned.  I would like to place a quote in the margin to the left of a paragraph.  How do I insert such text?  Thank you

Use a textbox or a frame. Textbox is easier for most purposes.

Can I use a field code from my mail merge to accomplish this?

I would like to print a number along right margin
starting 3" from top right end 1" from top right
