How do you set the default margins to be 1" instead of
the 1.25"?

Mary, you don't say what version of Word, but the procedure is pretty much
the same in all. So:

1-File > Page Setup > Margins
2-Set up the margin values
3-Click Default... (May be Add to template... in Word97)
4-Click Yes

I'm on Word 2002 and tried your solution and it worked
