I am trying to insert an excel object into an existing
word doc.  The excel file has more line than will fit on
the page, but i can not seem to extend it down to the
next page.

Word limits any objects to a maximum of one page; unlike in
Excel, objects can't be broken across pages.

You need to either insert (paste!) as a Word table (you can
retain a link to the original). Or you need to break down
the object (manually) so that each part will fit on a page.
