I'm trying to create a template or a style that I can use
when opening rtf or ascii files so that they all have the
necessary layout for our transcripts.

I've tried creating a template and then merging a file
into it, but I get an error message, something about
undocumented changes, and nothing imports or merges.

I've tried creating a style, and it shows up in doc1, but
when I open the ascii file, I try changing the style from
normal to the style I've created, and my style isn't
available to me.

I'm going in circles.  HELP.

Take these problems one at a time. Can you be specific about 'something
about undocumented changes' ? You need to sresolve this error before you go
any further. Applying a template to an existing document shouldn't be
causing problems.

Did you check the "Add to template" box when you created the style? It is
necessary to do that to make the style available in Normal.dot (or other
document template), and then you need to be sure that the appropriate
template is attached to the document you're editing.
