When I try to bold some selected type by pushing the bold button I get bold a d italic both.  The italic button does not show that it is pushed down either.

When the selected text changes to Bold and Italic, does the paragraph
style change from Normal (or whatever it's supposed to be) to something
else (e.g., Heading, Strong, Title, etc.)?

Instead of using the Bold button on the Formatting toolbar, try
selecting the text and pressing Ctrl+B on the keyboard.  Does the
selected text still change to Bold and Italic?
