Why are my documents opening up minus any formatting all of a sudden?

For about a week now, in an unpredictable way, when I open a Word
document, it will open minus any formatting.  Everything will be in
the default typeface and size, no bolding, underlining, graphics,
colors, etc.

If I then close the document (no saving of course) without exiting
Word, then reopen it, it's fine.

My computer has plenty of memory (512 meg) and is free of viruses and
malware - I regularly update and run NAV, Stinger, Adaware, and
Spybot.

This is in Word 2000, which I've used extensively for more than four
years before this problem set in.  My O/S is Windows 98.

In the File Open dialog, change the "Files of type" setting from "Recover
Text from Any File" to "All Word Documents." For more, see

Darn you're good.  But you're probably also good enough that you
already knew that!

Well, this is a question I've seen a few times before (which is what makes
it a FAQ). <g>
