I am using Office 2000 on a Windows 98SE machine.  When I go to file / page
setup / paper size and select a custom paper size and try to print, the PC
freezes. Excel works fine and the problem seems to be only with word. Any
ideas what may be happening? Thanks for any help.

If you choose a different printer as the "currently selected" or
"default" printer, and then try to select a custom paper size, does Word
still get hung up?  If the problem goes away with a different printer,
then delete and reinstall the problem printer in Start | Control Panel |
Printers.  While you're at it, you might want to see if the printer
manufacturer has a newer driver for your printer on their website.
