I am interested in installing office 03, but having the
reading pane option in office 2003 unchecked.  Is there a
customization i can do to make this happen?

From the wording of your question, I'm wondering if you're having to install
Office 2003 on a lot of machines and want to add this option to the
administrative install. I don't know the answer to that. If it's just a
single machine you're asking about, just clear the check box for "Allow
starting in Reading Layout" on the General tab of Tools | Options.

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, it is a deployment.  I am
using the Custom Installation Wizard.  Under MS Word,
General tab, there is the option to enable the reading
pane.  I turn on that option, but uncheck the box to make
it available.  I thought this would uncheck the box in
the application when installed, but it does not.

I'm not sure I understand your statement that you "turn on that option, but
uncheck the box to make it available." I think you're saying that you are
checking a box to install the feature but unchecking a box to have it
enabled by default. Since I am not that familiar with the installation
options, I can't say whether what you're doing should succeed or not. You'd
probably get better help on this issue in the microsoft.public.office.setup
NG.
