I cannot figure out how to remove style emphasis. Even if
I change the paragraph style, the lead-in emphasis that I
assigned previously remains.
It sounds as if you have applied a character style. Select the text and
press Ctrl+Spacebar.

Emphasis is a character style. Select the words involved and press
Crtl-Spacebar. This will remove the character formatting.

Pressing Ctrl+Spacebar does apply the DPF. That is, it removes direct font
formatting.
