Hi, Juli. Those lines are bottom borders on your paragraphs. To remove, double-click on a paragraph (or press Ctrl+A to select the whole document, if you want to remove all borders at once), then click on Format | Borders and Shading | Borders tab | None. If you don't want Word to create these paragraph borders for you, click on Tools | Autocorrect Options | Autoformat As You Type tab | uncheck the "Border lines" box.

It worked! Thanks so much. I've used Word for 8 years and

This behaviour is set by the tools > autocorrect > autoformat as you type
options. In particular the 'apply border lines' option. Regain control by
unchecking most of the options on this page.
