My document has a field inserted in many locations.  Is it possible to turn
on automatic field updates so that whenever I change the field's value, the
field automatically updates throughout the document?  Because currently I
have to go everywhere and right-click->Update field over each occurance.

The short answer is no, (unless this is a protected form) but you can update
all at once - CTRL+A then F9 or use a macro attached to a toolbar button.
You'll find suitable code (and how to use it) at
