I have a customer that whenever he starts a new Word
document, the default starting position of the cursor is
line 4.5.  He cannot click to the top of the page as the
location of 4.5 is being treated as if it's the top of
the page.  If he goes to a normal view, he can begin at
the true top of the page but, if it's a 2 page document
and he prints it out, the 2nd page's text begins on line
4.5.  Has anyone ever seen anything like this?  If he
goes to an old document, right clicks on it and chooses
New, the document behaves as it should.  Thoughts?
Thanks.

On the Layout tab of Page Setup, change the vertical alignment from Center
to Top. Do this in a new blank document, without making any other changes,
and then click the Default... button in Page Setup.

Hi David,

It sounds like this is a variation of the "blank document not blank" problem
discussed at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm. In
this case, instead of having extraneous text in the Normal.dot template,
your customer has the Vertical Alignment setting in File > Page Setup >
Layout set to Center instead of Top.

He should open Normal.dot as discussed in the article and change the setting
to Top. Insert a space character on the document page and then delete it --
this "dirties" the template and makes sure the file gets saved. Then close
Word and reopen it, and all should be well.
